Kara’s Collection: Summer Denial

Yesterday, I went to buy our camping supplies, and brought my firstborn along. Someone graciously bought the other kids their school supplies, but Ella wanted to do it herself. So as I shopped she went and grabbed what she needed. She filled my basket and my heart sank just a bit. It’s flying away; this summer has been one of the most full, most amazing summers I have known, and it’s coming to an end. My heart is completely mixed I’m full of happy and sad feelings about it.

Friday night I had the great privilege of speaking to the graduating class of 2014 from Evangelical Christian Academy. They had a lovely service that honored the accomplishments of the students as well as the families that supported the students throughout their education.

As I was sitting in the audience waiting to speak, I felt like I was on a roller coaster of nervous emotions. I hate feeling nervous. Hate it! It feels out of control, and no matter of trying to calm myself down helped. But I had prepared and prepared, and once I walked on stage I calmed down, and once I started, I really enjoyed myself.

We are in the final days of the school year. It is our great privilege to attend performances, speeches, special moments for our children. Behind closed doors it’s a mad scramble to find the appropriate attire. Children are attending most events in capri pants that were once long pants at the beginning of the school year. We are delighting in their music, their friends, and their hearts that long to share their accomplishments. I am desperately in the audience beaming upon the faces of my children. My heart is screaming, I’m here, do you see me, I’m here, and I love you.

Similar to my fixated desire to buy my kids lunch boxes, I have a need to bake cupcakes for Lake’s classroom for his birthday. Facing another birthday, I realize I don’t have the strength I had for Harper Joy’s birthday. It’s hard noticing the difference, but I have also noticed some amazing things today while baking these important cupcakes. God knew Harper was my child that loves the house full of people as much as her mama. He also knew Lake would love the weekend we have planned to celebrate him. Like with Harper Joy, many are coming together to celebrate Lake. He gets an Air Force football game with his daddy, a birthday breakfast with our family, and a sweet new ride (hopefully, we haven’t found it yet).

Kids are so honest. So honest. Yesterday was a big day. My first day in public sporting my new Sinead look, wig shopping, and the first time I was asked by my kids if I was going to die.

When I walked in from wig shopping, my sweet second-born asked me if I was going to die. I looked at her and said, Yes. Then I invited her upstairs with me as I put on my comfy clothes. Big conversations require an elastic waist.
