Kara’s Collection: In the Dark Hours

The evening hours are always the most difficult. My heart breaks, my fears come, and certainly the lies persist. My failures feel as though they are placed under a spotlight, and grace is difficult to come by in the dark. It was so good to share my heart in this place, to cry big, hard tears, and to invite Jesus into my broken heart to walk me towards grace.

The early years of parenting were filled with angst and struggles over sleeping. I read books, asked friends, spent hours poring over the issue of sleep with my babies before Ella even arrived. I would read these books that had endless tips on how to get a wee babe to sleep all night long. Obviously, that sounded delicious. Amazing. Sign me up!

The search for grace is not a new one to this site. It is certainly not a new concept. But the utter necessity of it through my illness gave me life when everything reeked of death. I looked for the glimmers of life, the hope in my day, and the places I was met by Jesus.

I have grown a new love; actually, it’s a love I’ve had for a long, long time. Putting these words I’ve been given on paper has grown into a great love of my heart. Like a pastor who preaches over himself in the hopes of taking hold of a new truth of the gospel, writing is a place I write beyond myself. I write my hopes, my fears, my longings to take hold of truths. Some days I meet the expectation of love I write about, others days I fail extraordinarily and find myself in the glorious humble place of repentance.

I can’t write enough, sing the praises of my friend Jen Lints enough. When we were going through the Waldo Canyon fire over a year ago, we were given a window into what matters. The moment you only have a few trunk spaces in a car to carry away what matters, you realize what is important. First, the people, then the memories of the people in your life. We filled our car with our sweet family, then we packed in pictures and journals. In light of the blazing fire, nothing else was important.
